Georgia has a rich cultural history with traditions that have been praticed for centuries.
Where We Work
Georgia
Foundation for Progress is currently concentrating its efforts on the post-Soviet republic of Georgia. After being part of the Soviet Union for almost a century, Georgia is now an independent and democratic republic, which is located in the Caucasus region next to Turkey, Armenia and Russia.
With its high levels of poverty and its precious natural environment, Georgia is a deserving nation of Foundation for Progress’s funds.
Poverty Alleviation in Georgia
Ever since independence from the Soviet Union, Georgia has had high levels of poverty. Currently 55% of the population lives below the poverty line. Also, Georgia is ranked 96 out of 177 countries by the United Nations Development Program’s "Human Development Index". This index is used as a measure of poverty and development and Georgia is in the bottom 50% of the list. It is considered less developed and more impoverished than nations such as Iran, the Philippines, and Lebanon.
Nature Conservation in Georgia
Environmentally, Georgia holds an important reservoir of biodiversity and has high levels of endemic and rare wildlife. Georgia is considered a globally significant "biodiversity hotspot" based on the richness of species and level of endemism recorded. However, during the past decade Georgia’s biodiversity has significantly decreased.
Loss of habitats, fragmentation and degradation, illegal hunting and fishing, introduction of alien species, and unsustainable use of biological resources are all contributing to the decline of the wonderful nature that is present within Georgia.
